I'm a student in a professional school, changing from one professions to another. I insert humorous comments into otherwise nonhumorous conversations. I often score a winning joke but not always. I told a woman the first time I took her out that I was funny, so she agreed to go out, since humor was one of her most important manselection criteria. Trouble is, she sat on her hands all evening and waited for me to entertain her, without providing interactive material to inspire me. Needless to say, she didn’t think I was funny and our first outing was our last. My children, who know me better, think I’m hilarious. We have running jokes in the family, among many onetime jokes. One is the effeminate accent, delivered in my bassbaritone voice. The contrast between the lisp with effeminate phrasing and the deep voice makes for mirth. Another is “don’t look at my food!” Years ago, as a joke, I complained, with deadpan face, about my children’s looking at my food. I even surrounded my plate with my arms and put my face close to the plate, as if trying to block their view of my food. I said, “It’s my food. I don’t want you to look at it! You can’t see my food.” Nonsense, but mirth again.I produced, directed and acted in comedyrevues at my medical school in Ireland for two of my six years there.

The gurus in charm and romance nowadays are in the business of trivializing women. It seems to me that women should be outraged that men think so little of them, but then, what do I know?
